Inhalant Allergy Screen (IgE)

This form of acute (classical) allergy involves the production of a special class of antibody called IgE (immunoglobulin E). These antibodies are bound to specific cells called mast cells, found in the skin, lungs and in many other tissues. Mast cells contain many powerful chemicals including histamine, that when released in the skin, causes an itchy red rash. If histamine is released in the lung it may cause muscle contraction, constricting the bronchial tubes and causing a disturbance of normal 'air flow', thereby triggering the primary mechanism of asthma. This type of allergy, is often genetic, and if either parent is 'allergic', there is a 40-80% increase in the likelihood that their children will also suffer from allergies.

Symptoms associated with IgE reactions:

  • Hayfever (sneezing, stuffy nose, excess mucus)
  • Asthma
  • Urticaria (hives)
  • Swollen tongue, throat, gums or lips
  • Itchy or tingling tongue, throat, gums or lips
  • Watery itchy or swollen eyes
  • Rhinitis
  • Colic
  • Anaphyaxis
  • Eczema
  • Skin rashes

How does the test work?

The identification of the specific IgE antibodies is achieved through a blood test, often referred to as the RAST test, and is safe as it does not involve the risk of adverse allergic reactions. Accurate identification of this type of allergy is vital, as treatment strategies are very different from those of food intolerances.
