Helicobacter Pylori

H.pylori bacteria

Helicobacter Pylori Breath Test

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium which can survive in the highly acidic environment of the stomach.  H.pylori bacteria have the ability to attach to the cell surface under the mucus lining, which protects the stomach from the acidic digestive juices.

This can cause the protective mucus lining to thin allowing acid produced in the stomach to come into contact with the cells lining the stomach possibly causing pain and discomfort.  It can also increase the alkalinity of the stomach which increases the chances of further digestive problems, and other bacteria or pathogens infecting the digestive tract.

This bacterium has been shown to be the single biggest cause of ulcer formation and gastritis. It is now believed that virtually all abdominal ulcers, apart from drug-induced forms are caused by H. pylori.

Who gets H.pylori ?

It is thought that the infection occurs primarily in childhood though lays dormant for many years eroding and damaging the stomach lining, causing continual damage. Genetic studies have shown that blood group A is more prevalent to H. pylori. If there is a history of gastric/peptic ulcers, poor diet, high stress levels, excessive caffeine/alcohol intake, and high use of aspirin and NSAIDs the risk of infection increases. Socio-economic such as overcrowding, poor hygiene or water supply can also increase risk. The majority of people with ulcers have been found to be infected with the H. pylori bacteria.

Signs and symptoms of h.pylori infection:

  • Dull, gnawing ache in abdominal area that persists for days even weeks and occurs 2-3 hours after eating or in the middle of the night and is relieved by eating or taking antacids

  • Duodenal and gastric ulcers

  • Chronic gastritis

  • Excess acidity or dyspepsia

  • Coronary heart disease

  • Indigestion

  • Heartburn

  • Acid reflux

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Burping

  • Weight loss and decreased appetite

  • Upper intestinal bloating

  • Family history of gastric cancer

It is worth noting that if you have a partner who has proved positive to the H. pylori bacteria then you may consider testing since 70% of partners have been found to share an infection.

How the test works

A simple breath test is available which is able to confirm that there is an active current infection of H.pylori. The breath test procedure is a highly accurate and non-invasive diagnostic test.
