Female Hormone Panel
(Progesterone, Oestradiol & Testosterone)

The menstrual cycle represents a woman's reproductive life, beginning with puberty and ending with the cessation of periods at menopause. Unfortunately many factors can influence this delicate balance of hormones, including stress, hormone imbalances, nutritional deficiencies and toxins.

Today problems with the menstrual cycle and fertility are among the most common complaints seen by doctors. PMS is estimated to affect 70-90% of women and 25% of couples may have problems conceiving a child due in part to these menstrual abnormalities.

Symptoms of hormone imbalances:

  • Loss of libido
  • Migraines / headaches
  • Hot flushes
  • Weight gain
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Water retention
  • Breast swelling / tenderness
  • Bloating
  • Mood swings
  • Fatigue
  • Cancer
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • PCOS
  • Cellulite
  • Endometriosis
  • Irregular periods
  • PMS
  • Low libido
  • Painful periods
  • Osteoporosis
  • Depression

What is Measured ?

The Female Hormone Panel is a saliva assay that analyses levels of progesterone and oestrogen over 28 days (or an extended cycle), by sampling twelve times through the cycle. The relative levels of these two hormones can then be plotted and graphically to represent any abnormalities throughout the menstrual cycle. This test also measures testosterone which can be elevated in woman, e.g. in those with PCOS.

Why use Saliva?

The female hormone screen is a safe, non-invasive saliva assay which, unlike blood, measures the free and therefore bioavailable hormone levels. It is possible to have a normal total amount of a hormone in blood tests, but this may be 'bound' and unavailable to exert its effect on tissue. Analysis by blood also only provides a "snap shot" of the hormone status and not adequately reflecting the subtle changes happening over the whole menstrual cycle.
