Chronic Fatigue Screen

Chronic Fatigue Screen

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) can be a debilitating and complex disorder characterized by profound fatigue that it is often not improved by bed rest and that may be worsened by physical or mental activity. People with CFS often function at a substantially lower level of activity than they were capable of before the onset of their illness. In some individuals the conditions can last for years. The cause or causes of CFS have not been identified though knowledge of contributing factors is increasing all the time.

Diagnosis

A great deal of debate has surrounded the issue of how best to define CFS. In essence, a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome is usually based on a patient experiencing a combination of the symptoms below:

1) Have severe chronic fatigue of six months or longer duration with other known medical conditions excluded by clinical diagnosis; and 2)  concurrently have four or more of the most commonly associated symptoms including: substantial impairment in short-term memory or concentration; sore throat; tender lymph nodes; muscle pain; multi-joint pain without swelling or redness; headaches of a new type, pattern or severity; unrefreshing sleep; and post-exertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours.

Other commonly associated signs & symptoms:

  • Fatigue note relieved by rest; exhaustion after effort

  • Aches and pains all over, affecting both joints and muscles, and muscle weakness

  • Dizziness, poor concentration, poor memory, headaches

  • Nausea, wind, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel or other digestive problems

  • Over reaction to heat or cold - shivering, sweating

  • Sleep disorders, drowsiness, lethargy

  • Frequent infections of ears/nose/throat, sinusitis, rhinitis,

  • asthma, eczema, acne,

Possible contributing factors:

  • Viral infection - past or present

  • Allergy - food and/or environment

  • Toxicity and pollution

  • High stress - past or present

  • Hyperventilation

  • Underactive or inefficient thyroid function

  • low blood sugar - hypoglycaemia

  • Gut dysbiosis

  • Poor immunity

  • Over use of antibiotics, hormone treatments, pharmaceuticals medications, steroids, recreational drugs.

What does the CFS profile include?

  • Metabolic Analysis Profile (urinary organic acids)

  • Adrenal Stress Index

Chronic illness is often a combination of genetic tendencies, nutrient insufficiencies, and other environmental influences, which negatively impact on overall metabolic function. Quantitive analysis of organic acids in urine reveals these metabolic imbalances and can provide a highly beneficial tool for effective primary intervention.

The metabolic analysis profile allows us to measure the organic acids formed in various tissues or by intestinal microbes as metabolic end products. These accumulations in the urine can indicate metabolic dysfunction from inherited or acquired enzyme deficiencies, specific nutrient insufficiencies, a build-up of toxicants, drug effects, and even microbial overgrowth. Every cell is affected when a metabolic pathway is interrupted and the clinical expression is unique to every patient, and determined by genetic tendencies, nutrient insufficiencies, medical history and recent toxin exposure.

Physical or emotional stress, which is commonly reported as a pre-onset condition in CFS patients, activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, or HPA axis, leading to increased release of cortisol and other stress hormones. Cortisol and corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH), influence the immune system and many other body systems. Recent studies revealed that CFS patients often produce lower levels of cortisol than healthy controls. Cortisol suppresses inflammation and cellular immune activation, and reduced levels might relax constraints on inflammatory processes and immune cell activation.
